Tipsy to hammered: liquor sales in Kerala hit record Rs 410 crore this Onam
Thiruvananthapuram: Tipplers in Kerala woke up to a bigger hangover and some stunning figures a day after Thiruvonam with the liquor sales in the state scaling new heights.
The revenue from liquor sales in the state during the Onam season soared this year by 15.99 percent compared to last year. The Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) recorded a sale of a whopping Rs 409.55 crore in the last eight days. Last year, the figures were Rs 353.08 crore during the same period.
According to statistics released by the Bevco, liquor worth Rs 532.34 was sold through its outlets across the state during the 13 days from the first of this month to Uthradam (Tuesday), the day before Thiruvonam.
This year, a sale of Rs 58.01 crore was recorded on the Uthradam day alone, a little below last years' Rs 59 crore.
Irinjalakkuda topped the chart with highest sales Tuesday (Uthradam). The revenue generated from there during that day amounts up to Rs 53.84 lakh. Chalakudy, which marked record sales last year sold liquor worth Rs 40 lakh this Uthradam.
